Summer and High-Humidity Conditions

The most important tool on your lash cart isn't your tweezers — it's a hygrometer. Read it before you open your adhesive. Here's how to respond to what you see:
- Below 40% humidity: Run a cool-mist humidifier near your work area — not directly over the client. Aim to bring the room to 50–55% before starting. Use a slightly deeper dip to ensure more adhesive contacts the natural lash. Refresh your drop less frequently but monitor the surface for skinning (a dull, slightly wrinkled appearance means the top layer has started curing).
- 40–60% humidity: This is your target window. A fast-cure adhesive calibrated for this range can be used confidently. On nano-misters: use them after completing each eye to fully cure residual adhesive and reduce monomer off-gassing. One light pass at 10–15 cm is enough. Misting mid-application or over-misting introduces excess moisture that can shock-polymerize bonds that haven't fully seated — particularly risky at the base of the extension where the bond is thinnest.
Adhesive Storage: The Mistakes That Kill Retention Before You Start
Even technically flawless application will underperform if you're working from degraded adhesive. Storage failures are responsible for a significant proportion of preventable retention complaints, and they're easy to overlook because the adhesive looks and pours normally right up until it doesn't.
Cyanoacrylate begins curing the moment it contacts moisture — including the trace humidity inside an improperly sealed bottle. Every time you open the cap and expose the nozzle to the air, some micro-polymerization occurs at the tip. - Store at consistent room temperature away from windows, heat sources, and high-traffic areas where temperature swings. Avoid refrigeration unless your manufacturer explicitly recommends it — pulling a cold bottle into a warm treatment room creates condensation inside the bottle that starts curing the adhesive before you've opened it.
- Keep in an airtight bag with a silica gel packet. This is especially important during Vancouver's wet season and in humid studio environments. A small zip bag costs nothing and extends adhesive life noticeably.
- Track your open date. Most professional adhesives perform optimally within 4–6 weeks of opening, regardless of the stated shelf life on the box. Mark the bottle with a marker the first time you use it. When in doubt, replace it.
- Purge the nozzle after every use. Expel one small drop onto your palette, wipe the nozzle clean with a lint-free cloth, then cap immediately. Never leave the bottle uncapped for more than a minute or two, even during a set.
- Shake before every appointment. Roll or invert the bottle firmly for 30–60 seconds. Then expel two drops to clear the nozzle before placing your working drop. Skipping this step on a partially-used bottle is one of the most consistent causes of unpredictable cure.
If you transport adhesive between locations — a studio and a mobile kit, or supplies left in a vehicle — keep it insulated. Temperature extremes during BC winters or summers degrade adhesive faster than almost anything else. Allow it to return fully to room temperature (2–3 hours minimum) before opening.
